UWT Research at TRB 2025 – Advancing Transportation Innovation

The University of Washington Tacoma (UWT), a REAT Consortium member, showcased groundbreaking research at TRB 2025, focusing on autonomous mobility, safety, workforce development, and transportation equity.

 Research Highlights:

🔹 Public Perception of Autonomous Shuttles Dr. Panick Kalambay, Norris Novat, Dr. Boniphace Kutela, Dr. Abimbola Ongugbire, Dr. Angela Kitali, Dr. Emmanuel Kidando
This study examines public attitudes toward autonomous shuttles using data from the Cary Autonomous Shuttle Service Initiative (CASSI) in North Carolina. Findings show positive post-ride experiences enhance support, while concerns over delays and safety reduce confidence. The study provides key insights for policymakers on improving public trust and service design.

🔹 Public Attitudes Toward Autonomous Trucks - Dr. Panick Kalambay, Norris Novat, Dr. Emmanuel Kidando, Dr. Boniphace Kutela, Dr. Angela Kitali
This research explores how demographics and political affiliation shape the acceptance of autonomous trucks. Younger, college-educated individuals show higher support, while older populations and those unfamiliar with automation remain cautious. These insights help policymakers gauge public readiness for autonomous freight transport.

🔹 Young Novice Drivers and Police Traffic Stops Dr. Panick Kalambay, Francisca Kasubi, Clement Lippu, Dr. Boniphace Kutela, Dr. Angela Kitali, Dr. Emmanuel Kidando
Using 2020-2021 traffic stop data from Charlotte-Mecklenburg, this study examines how race, age, and officer experience influence outcomes for young novice drivers. Findings highlight disparities in stop reasons, search likelihood, and enforcement trends, informing efforts to promote equitable policing and safety education.

🔹 Bridging Disciplinary Gaps in the Transportation Workforce Dr. Jeffrey Walters, Philip Balyagati, Dr. Panick Kalambay, Dr. Josiah Owusu-Danquah, Dr. Emmanuel Kidando, Dr. Angela Kitali, Dr. Heather Dillon
This study identifies disciplinary silos in transportation engineering and the need for collaboration across civil engineering, AI, and planning. A survey of 70 transportation experts reveals gaps in workforce integration, highlighting strategies for holistic training and cross-disciplinary problem-solving.

🔹 Community Perceptions on Vision Zero in Tacoma Matyenyi Janeroza, Mihayo Meshack, Dr. Angela Kitali, Dr. Thobias Sando, Dr. Panick Kalambay, Dr. Emmanuel Kidando, Dr. Boniphace Kutela
A 2022 online survey found that 51% of Tacoma residents were unfamiliar with Vision Zero, despite widespread concerns about speeding and pedestrian safety. The study calls for greater public awareness, infrastructure improvements, and speed management policies to improve urban safety.

These research contributions advance mobility innovation, equity, and safety, reinforcing UWT’s role in shaping the future of transportation.
